J2SE Java 1.3 was the fastest release of the Java platform when it was released in May 2000. J2SE Java 1.3 has now been superseded by newer versions but the J2SE Java 1.3 download is still available from Sun's archive page.

On May 8, 2000 Sun Microsystems announced the shipment of the Java 2 Platform, Standard Edition (J2SE technology) version 1.3, the fast and secure foundation for building and deploying client-side enterprise applications. As with previous releases, J2SE v 1.3 was available as JRE and SDK downloads and provided the speedy performance and high functionality demanded by Web users and software developers.

With the inclusion of the Java HotSpot Client VM, it was the fastest release of the Java platform to date: When compared to the initial release of J2SE technology, J2SE Java 1.3 download boasted a 40% improvement in start-up time and a 25% smaller RAM footprint when measured against applications that use the Java Foundation Classes in a typical manner.
New features such as applet caching and automatic installation of optional packages by J2SE 1.3's Java Plug-in component enhance the speed and flexibility with which programs can be deployed on the web. J2SE Java 1.3 download also includes a powerful new sound API.

Previous releases of the platform limited audio support to basic playback of audio clips. With this release, the Java 2 Platform for the first time defines a set of standard classes and interfaces for low-level audio support.
Unfortunately J2SE Java 1.3 has completed the 'End of Life' process and is now no longer supported under standard support contracts by Sun. Sun's Java technology policy is to support the current shipping version of J2SE plus two back versions. Once the End-of-Life process is completed Sun removes support and the product is removed from Sun's download pages.

However, Sun is still providing the J2SE Java 1.3 download on their product archive page as a courtesy to developers and system builders for problem resolution. As J2SE Java 1.3 is now a down-revision product it does not contain the latest enhancements, bug and security fixes.
Sun recommends that users download the latest product release and that any use of the J2SE Java 1.3 download is at the sole discretion of the end user, Sun assumes no responsibility for any resulting problems.
