You can download Java software for free, there are three versions of the Java platform which Sun refers to as the Java Runtime Environment (JRE).
- Java ME (Micro Edition): Specifies several different sets of libraries (known as profiles) for devices which are sufficiently limited that supplying the full set of Java libraries would take up unacceptably large amounts of storage.
- Java SE (Standard Edition): For general purpose use on desktop PCs, servers and similar devices.
- Java EE (Enterprise Edition): Java SE plus various APIs useful for multi-tier client-server enterprise applications.
Also available is the Java Development Kit or JDK (previously known as Java Software Development Kit or SDK) which combines the JRE with extra components/tools useful to computer programmers for developing Java applications. As of 2006, the current version of the Java Platform is alternatively specified as version 1.5 or version 5.0 or version 5 (all refer to the same version), however, version 5 is the preferred reference.

 Java 1.3.1 - The J2SE Java 1.3.1 download contains enhancements and fixes that improve on previous versions. However J2SE has has begun the Sun 'End of Life' process & customers are encouraged to download the current release, J2SE 5.0.
 Java 1.3 - J2SE Java 1.3 was the fastest release of the Java platform when it was released in May 2000. J2SE Java 1.3 has now been superseded by newer versions but the J2SE Java 1.3 download is still available from Sun's archive page.
 Java 1.5 - Download Java 1.5 code-named "Tiger" and known as Java 5 has a number of improvements and new features that make using the Java language easier. Includes a Java 5 overview and download links.
 Java 1.4.2 - J2SE version 1.4.2 improves and updates the Java 2 platform giving it a Windows look and feel. You can download Java 1.4.2. for both Windows and Mac from the links section
 Java 1.4 - J2SE version 1.4 improved the performance and scalability of the Java platform when it was released. Although it has now been superceded by version 1.5, the Java 1.4 download is still available from Sun's archive page.
