The download Java 1.5, code-named "Tiger", has been hailed as the most significant new version of Java since the introduction of the language. Further, to confuse everyone, Sun's marketing people christened Java 1.5 (and all subsequent updated download Java 1.5 versions) as Java 5. The improvements developed in Java 5 are intended to make programs clearer, shorter, safer, and easier to develop, without sacrificing compatibility.

Java 5 is available as a Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 5.0 download which allows users to view Java technology-based applications and websites (more details can be found on the Java Runtime Environment page). The Java Development Kit (JDK) 5.0 is also available which allows software developers to write programs using the Java programming language, this download also includes the JRE.

These changes include generic types, metadata, autoboxing, an enhanced for loop, enumerated types, static import, C style formatted input/output, variable arguments, concurrency utilities, and simpler RMI interface generation.
