The Java 2 Platform, Standard Edition (J2SE) 1.4.1 update added new features as did the Java 1.4.1.Update 1 for Mac OS X. You can Download Java 1.4.1. for Mac and Windows via the links section.

Java 2 Platform, Standard Edition (J2SE) 1.4.1 was released in December 2002. It added built-in support for regular expressions, built-in Swing, and had a lot of nice changes. As with previous releases the J2SE download Java 1.4.1 release was available as JRE and SDK downloads.

Prior to the introduction of the J2SE download Java 1.4.1 release, writing effective applications that needed high throughput or minimal pause time during execution proved difficult for Java developers. But version 1.4.1's three new garbage collection algorithms specifically target these types of applications.
Although you can still download Java 1.41 J2SE from Sun's product archive page, it has completed the 'End of Life' process and is now no longer supported by Sun. As J2SE Java 1.4.1 is now a down-revision product it does not contain the latest enhancements, bug and security fixes. Sun recommends that users download the latest product release.

Java 1.4.1.Update 1 for Mac OS X
The Java 1.4.1 release represents a major rewrite on Apple's part. The infrastructure has been completely rewritten. Sun released the beta of Java 1.4 almost two years before this release and Apple has been a year behind Sun with most of its Java releases. Apple explains that taking the extra time now with this rewrite will make keeping up with Sun releases much easier in the future and promised to try for 60 days after Sun in future releases.

The Java 1.4.1 Update 1 for Mac OS X adds the following enhancements :
- Improved Java applet support for Safari and other web browsers that support the Java Internet Plug-In.
- Improved drawing correctness and performance.
- Support for AWT headless mode.
- Improved stability, memory usage, and correctness.
